When Cooling Systems Can’t Afford to Fail
Commercial HVAC systems work hard every day to maintain comfortable temperatures in hospitals, universities, manufacturing facilities, office buildings, campuses, and industrial plants. Yet one of the biggest threats to HVAC efficiency isn’t mechanical failure—it’s suspended solids circulating through the cooling water system.
Dust, dirt, pollen, organic debris, corrosion byproducts, and other contaminants continuously enter cooling tower water. If left unmanaged, these particles reduce heat transfer, increase energy consumption, shorten equipment life, and drive up maintenance costs. A properly designed sidestream filtration system helps eliminate these issues before they become expensive problems.
Why Clean Cooling Water Matters
Every cooling tower introduces airborne contaminants into the condenser water loop. As these suspended solids circulate through chillers, heat exchangers, pumps, and piping, they accumulate on heat transfer surfaces and inside critical equipment.
The result is a system that must work harder to deliver the same cooling capacity. Fouled heat exchangers reduce thermal efficiency, pumps experience increased wear, chemical treatment programs become less effective, and maintenance intervals become more frequent.
Tower-Flo® Water Filter Systems are designed to continuously remove suspended solids before they can accumulate throughout the HVAC system, improving overall performance while reducing operating costs. The company’s core philosophy is simple:
Less suspended solids means more thermal capacity for less operating cost.
Better Heat Transfer Means Lower Energy Costs
The efficiency of any HVAC system depends on its ability to transfer heat. Even a thin layer of dirt or biological material acts as insulation, forcing chillers to consume more energy to achieve the same cooling performance.
By continuously filtering suspended solids from the condenser water loop, Tower-Flo® systems help maintain cleaner heat exchanger surfaces, allowing equipment to operate closer to its original design efficiency.
Cleaner water helps reduce:
- Chiller energy consumption
- Pump workload
- Heat exchanger fouling
- Cooling tower scaling
- Overall utility costs
Instead of reacting to fouled equipment after performance declines, filtration prevents many of these issues from occurring in the first place.
Proper Filtration Is About More Than Installing a Filter
Not all filtration systems perform equally.
Tower-Flo® emphasizes that effective filtration depends on proper sizing, installation, and engineering—not simply selecting a filter based on pump flow. Filtration should be sized according to the total volume of water in the cooling system and the desired turnover rate, ensuring the filter keeps pace with the system’s ongoing dirt load rather than falling behind.
Every cooling system has different operating conditions, environmental factors, and contamination levels. That’s why proper filter selection combines engineering calculations with real-world application experience.

Why Tower-Flo® Recommends Sidestream Filtration
The location of a filtration system has a major impact on its effectiveness.
Tower-Flo® recommends independent sidestream filtration, which draws water directly from the cooling tower basin—the area where suspended solids naturally settle—and returns clean water back into the basin. This approach removes contaminants before they circulate through chillers, pumps, and heat exchangers.
Slipstream installations, by comparison, filter only a portion of water flowing through the recirculation piping, making it more difficult for suspended solids to reach the filter in the first place. According to Tower-Flo®, this configuration is typically less effective while often requiring a more expensive installation.
Basin Sweeper Piping Improves Overall System Performance
Many Tower-Flo® installations incorporate basin sweeper piping to improve filtration effectiveness even further.
Rather than allowing solids to settle and accumulate in dead zones within the cooling tower basin, properly designed sweeper piping directs filtered return water to move debris toward strategically located suction piping, where contaminants can be removed before reaching the HVAC equipment.
Simply moving debris around the basin isn’t enough—the suspended solids must actually reach the filter to be removed. As Tower-Flo® states, “Bottom line, solids have to get to the filter or they don’t get removed.”
Protecting Equipment While Reducing Maintenance
Cleaner condenser water benefits every component connected to the cooling loop.
By reducing suspended solids, facilities can expect:
- Reduced fouling inside chillers and heat exchangers
- Lower maintenance costs
- Longer equipment life
- Reduced chemical consumption
- Improved thermal performance
- Less system downtime
- Lower risk associated with biological growth
These operational improvements help facilities reduce total lifecycle costs while improving overall HVAC reliability.
